Couple Counseling and Psychotherapy
In couple or marital counseling, repeated patterns and cycles of interaction that interfere with getting along and having a good time together are identified. We clarify what skills protect relationship, allow partners to work through difficult times and decrease discord. I encourage new ways of interacting. Differences are explored using dialogue. Individual growth and self-discovery can be an added benefit to the crucible of couple therapy.
I first meet with the two of you for one and a half sessions and if we decide to continue, I schedule a single session with each one of you before the two of you come back in. Usually, couples sessions take place every three weeks because couple work can stir difficult feelings. The time in between sessions gives you a chance to practice new skills.
In pre-marital counseling, I ask partners to describe how they will address the concerns that couples typically face in the course of their committed relationship and learn or improve how to dialogue collaboratively.
